Gratitude to our pioneers

Return to Discussions

Im 55 year old white, single dad beginning to see how I have led a privileged life of fewer obstacles than minorities face. Now in the full throes of middle age, its natural for me to reflect and identify the pioneers of my generation. Heres what I realize: gay men have made the most significant contributions to our society. By gay, Im not referring to homosexuality as much as an outward expression which honors ones authentic sexual orientation. Whereas womens lib had generations of suffragists, etc. behind them, gay men claimed their identity almost out of nothing starting in the 70s and picking up steam in the 80s and beyond. Now it seems that gay is one of many norms, but to achieve that took a generation of sacrifice by true game changers.

What is the best way to honor aging gay men for making changes that have benefited all in society? Should I say Thank you for your service to our country and making the world a better and more affirming place? Should I tell younger gay men who take their rights, privileges and gay hipness for granted how good they have it thanks to older pioneers? Or do I brag about the gay hidden virtues to those who havent gotten the memo and are still homophobic and increasingly curmudgeonly? Yes. One day at a time.

I am open to suggestions on how to express to greatest gay generation gratitude and am curious for feedback.

The best way to honor our mentors is to befriend one who is probably isolated and alone after losing everyone and who just wants a buddy to do things with. The other is write letters and phone political leaders and put an end to the horrific anti LGBTQ2 policy and law
