CIGARS: Flavored vs Infused vs Natural
Return to DiscussionsCigars can be natural tobacco, flavored or infused with coffee or some other aromatic substance. Usually, smokers tend to enjoy one of these, and that'sit! It's like the creamy vs crunchy peanut butter debate. Interestingly enough, I tend to like aspects of all of these (even the peanut butters)! So, how do you like your cigars (pipe tobacco also applies)? Do you like the natural flavor, a subtle infusion of aromas like coffee or do you like colorful and fun flavors?
I tend to like natural flavors best. If I need a little extra kick, I'll smoke a maduro but usually a nice mild Macanudo is my preference. I also smoke a pipe on occasion and I like the Rum or Black Cherry infused tobacco. I'm not sure if I actually taste it or if it's the smell of the smoke that has my brain thinking I'm tasting the Rum or Black Cherry. hahahaha
On occasion, I'll dip the end into my Crown Royal but not always. Got me thinking ... may light one up here in a bit and enjoy the late afternoon/evening warmth with a stogie and a spot of whiskey! ;-)

Just like I like my body unaffected by sheets which hide my natural
glow (lol), I also like my cigars naked. No added flavors. No
dipping. Just a high quality smoke, hand rolled with premium
binders and fillers. And of course I'm naked smoking a delicious
Cuban montecristo #2 in my patio as I type. I sell cigars in my
store. When noob smokers ask me what to smoke I return the
question, what did you smoke last and did you like it? They may say
a flavored smoke like acid or other machine made brands. I then ask
if they want my honest opinion. Naturally, men like to find an
experienced cigar purveyor so they are interested. My simple answer
to cigars that are whiskey or Irish cream flavored, for example,
is this. When a person starts learning about cigars, they often go
for inexpensive or flavored or both. That's totally cool. When they
have experience, like myself, they buy a premium cigar then pair it
with a glass of whisky or a glass of Irish cream. It's a better
combination. High quality cigar. High quality booze. This is better
than a collision of the two into one. Cheers and happy smoking.
I used to enjoy the Drew Estate cigars... usually the Kuba Kuba. Very complex flavor, but after awhile, it seemed more like candy and did not pair well with wine or spirits. Also, I can't really put them in the same humidor with my non-infused smokes.
I guess that I have transformed away from the flavored or infused cigars to the mild Connecticut wrapped cigars and eventually to the robust and rich thick smoke of a sun grown or maduro cigar. I like to experiment with pairing with aged rums, bourbons or single malt Scotch.
It would be better to share these with like minded clothes free fellow aficionados.

I agree these cigars have so much flavor that they don't pair well with drinks, so I tend to smoke them alone. For after-dinner pairing, I like the bolder madurowrapped cigars like Onyx or CAO Italia.
Ahhh. Sounds like tonight will be a nude cigar under the stars night. That bold taste of the madiro wrapper certainly adds a twang of flavor. Perfect post steak or anything charred. For a more mild post dinner smoke, grab a Connecticut or a corojo wrapper. Less intense but still present in the draw. Happily smoking my nude brothers.

You have to try the Liga #9 by Drew Estate. Although the Shade is a nice Connecticut but full of flavor. I have a fine collection myself of the Drew Estate to incude Undercrown, Flying Pigs, Nica Rusticas and a few others.
Drew Estate, Rocky Patel, Diesel are my go to's I enjoy so many of them that it just depends on what I can find and my mood.
I do smoke a Nicaraguan Tobacco before any other,
A Connecticut wrapper is good however it tends to be harsher than I like, Funny thing is, they not only make me sneeze but make my dog sneeze too.

I played golf the other day with my son in law, his friend and his friend's uncle. They don't smoke but I like to have a cigar when I play golf. I've got a close friend and we both like whiskey, scotch (him), wine, golf and a good cigar to go with all of those! When I play golf with my close friend, at the turn, we light up our cigars and pour the whiskey into a cup, sometimes over the rocks and sometimes, neat!
So I'm playing golf with my son in law and I'm going to need a cigar because I left the house so quickly, I forgot to grab one. I bought a La Finca from the pro shop. Never had one but it was pretty darn good! It burned down nicely and it lasted near the entire back 9. My score was crappy but the whiskey and La Finca smoothed out the day. Warm enough to play naked but
