About nudeyrudy_hf5983
my name is Mavis L. Wanczyk, and I am from Chicopee, Massachusetts. For most of my life, I lived a simple, hardworking existence that many people can relate to. I was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts, and moved with my family to Springfield when I was 14. After graduating from Springfield Technical Community College, I settled in Chicopee and built my life there.
For 32 years, I worked in patient care at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. It was steady work helping others, and I genuinely enjoyed being part of a team that cared for people every day. I am a proud mother of two wonderful adult childrena daughter and a sonwho have always been the center of my world. Family has always meant everything to me. I shared close moments with my mother, stepfather, and sisters, including our regular Friday-night Keno games where my lucky number 4 often made an appearance.
Life wasnt always easy. I went through a divorce in 2012, and in November 2016, I faced a heartbreaking loss when my ex-husband, William, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident. Through the ups and downs, I kept showing up for my job and my family, holding onto the belief that good things could still happen.
On August 23, 2017, everything changed in the most unexpected way. I stopped at the Pride Station & Store on Montgomery Street in Chicopee and bought five Powerball ticketsthree with numbers I chose myself (drawn from family birthdays and my lucky number 4) and two Quick Picks. That evening, the winning numbers were drawn: 06-07-16-23-26 with Powerball 04. I didnt realize I had won until after my shift the next day. A firefighter friend checked my ticket for me and confirmed the impossible: I had won the $758.7 million jackpotthe largest single-ticket prize in U.S. lottery history at the time.
The shock was overwhelming. I could barely drive home; my friend followed me to make sure I got there safely. The next day, on August 24, 2017, I stepped forward at a news conference at Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters in Braintree, accompanied by my mother and two sisters. I chose the cash option, which gave me a lump-sum payment of about $480.5 million before taxesroughly $336 million after taxes.
At the press conference, I told reporters the truth: Ive called them and told them I will not be coming back. After 32 years, my dream of early retirement had arrived suddenly. When asked what I wanted to do first, I said, The first thing I want to do is just sit back and relax. I even joked that I might celebrate by hiding in my bed that night. I called the win a pipe dream that had come true earlier than I ever expected. I felt a mix of excitement, gratitude, and a little fear about what lay ahead.
In the years since, I have chosen to live quietly and privately. The sudden attention and fortune brought many changes, and I decided to focus on my family, my peace, and figuring out the next chapter on my own terms. I stepped away from the spotlight to protect the life I wanted to lead.
Winning the lottery was life-changing, but it also taught me how important privacy, family, and staying grounded truly are. My story is one of ordinary hard work meeting extraordinary luck. I hope it reminds people that dreams even the ones that feel like pipe dreamscan sometimes come true when you least expect it.
Thank you for reading a little piece of my journey.
