A firefighter friend checked my ticket for me and confirmed the impossible: I had won the $758.7 million jackpotthe largest single-ticket prize in U.S. lottery history at the time.
The shock was overwhelming. I could barely drive home; my friend followed me to make sure I got there safely. The next day, on August 24, 2017, I stepped forward at a news conference at Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters in Braintree, accompanied by my mother and two sisters. I chose the cash option, which gave me a lump-sum payment of about $480.5 million before taxesroughly $336 million after taxes.
At the press conference, I told reporters the truth: Ive called them and told them I will not be coming back. After 32 years, my dream of early retirement had arrived suddenly.
