The Never-Ending Story, Web-Style

Several years ago, this idea cropped up on another board, and this forum seems like a good place to suggest it.

The premise: a person writes a single paragraph as the opening of a story on any subject. The next person continues the story from that point for another paragraph, and on and on. The directions the stories took were in some cases mind-boggling. This being a family-style board, there should be restrictions on foul language, sexual content, etc., but other than that, the only rule is that there are no rules.

Any takers?

He went ahead and got out of bed and into the showwer to start his day. While in the shower he thought about what was going to happen and with who that day. What would he do, what was he going to say. It was something that he was really bothered by, but knew that he wasn`t in control.

"Coffee," the though as the water cascaded over him. "Coffee to get handle on things." In fact, he had an aversion to coffee, but somehow it seemed the right drink for the morning. He shut off the shower with a purpose and grabed a bathrobe. Wrapping himself in it, he stepped out of the cubicle, heading for the kitchen. As the walked, or rather squelched, his way, the phone rang.

"Good morning.  Joseph?" asked the voice at the other end of the line.  She didn`t identify herself. The businesslike tone, and the "Joseph", made him think it was someone from Allison`s office.  "They`re sending a car for you, but it would be better if you came on your own.  Allison would like to speak with you first.  Bring your passport."

That put an immediate damper on the day for him - Alsion was the sister of his ex-wife and also his head of sales and marketing. If she wanted to see him, with his passport, then she must have some really grimy rotten job for him to do in some backwater as a punishment for splitting with Elaine.

Passport? That mean he might just as well pack a bag. How long was he going to be gone and where was he going? What kind of clothes, business? casual? Was it out n themidle of nowhere or was it in some big city? Guess he would packi for a week and bring both types of clothes.

His mind drifted back to the first assignment Allison had sent him on.  He had been nervous, excited and had looked forward to it with great anticipation.  And it didn`t hurt matters that the associate accompanying him was a real looker as well as intelligent, witty, charming, and a steel trap mind.  Her tongue could be sharp at times, but that flaw could easily be overlooked.  Or so he thought.  Elaine.  Joseph would never forget that trip.  They`d been instructed to pack for rugged terrain - no hotels for them.  They`d be sleeping in a Yurt.  Elaine had laughingly asked him if he had a strong stomach.  Little did he know they`d be drinking strange goat milk drinks.  Their destination was to Mongolia and then on to a little known country with a fancy stamp and an unusual style of singing - Tannu Tuva. Once there, the instructions had seemed simple enough to follow.  Little did he know how complicated the situation would turn.

Tannu Tuva. How the very thought of that place sent cold chills down his spine. He had heard of cultures where outsiders were barely tolerated as long as they knew their place, but Tannu Tuva had developed it to a fine art. When he deboarded the Piper Cub at Tannu Tuva International Airport -- a pompous name for a place with a grass runway and two aging Cessnas --  the scruffy customs agent gave him a badly-printed brochure of what was expected of visitors. He read through its broken English, wondering if there was anything that he would do that wasn`t improper, offensive or illegal. Head bowed. No eye contact. Don`t speak unless spoken to. Don`t smile. Why the company chose to locate its research center in this God-forsaken back end of nowhere was a mystery.

He reached the office just after 8 - although business hours actually were 9 - 5, most staff got in for around 7.30, so he was late by the standards set. Waiving his security pass at an unresponsive security guard, he crossed thr foyes, now bathed in light, dappled by the fake palm trees dotted around. He disliked the air of supereriority that that the building sought to claim for itself.It was as false as the company itself - a sham. With a heavy tread, he made for the lift and took it to the fourth floor. His mind racng around the possible outcomes of his meeting, he barely noticed himself approach the door of hopelesness. Knocking, he was summonded inside by a curt, business voice. Sitting before him behind a desk which itself shouted power, authoriity and terror to those on the wrong side, sat his boss. She was only in her early thirties, but already a real go-getter. She dressed like a woman who knew how to win and spoke in the same fashion.
"I presume," she said, "that you want to know why you`re here?"

Well i have a few questions running through my mnd ma`am, but that IS one of them. "And the OTHERS?" beckoned a rather harsh voice. "Well"  Joe replied timidly, I would ALSO like to know WHY I needed my passport, Where I am supposed to be heading, WITH whom and for how long?" "That will ALL be disclosed in due time" replied the still harsh voiced woman, but FIRST....

First! I want to know why you left my sister? What happened between you two. Was is Elaine`s job or her wanting more out of life than to be with a husband that had to travel all over the world for his comapny? You two talked about kids, what happened there? I know that you loved each other and then all of a sudden you guys split up and never told anybody the real reason why. It is time that I know!!!! Do you still love her? Are you ever going to try and get back together? In Alison`s mind she really hoped that the answer to the last question was No they weren`t because she was in love with Joe herself. She had never told anybody especially Joe and her sister. What was she going to do if he said that he wanted to get back together with his wife? She still needed to send him on this God forsaken assignment.

Instantly, he went of the defensive – he resented her questioning him on such personal matters, even if she was his ex-sister in law. He had never felt comfortable in her company either at work or outside. He wasn’t going to reveal the intimate details of why he and Elaine had split, her addictions to things best left unsaid. At first, he had seen her a as a beacon, but quickly she had become a burden, a woman he considered unfit to have the responsibility of children. Children – not a subject that had crossed his mind that often, though he guessed that if any came along it wouldn’t be a bad thing He shifted on his feat, hoping that he could end his interview as quickly as possible and just get on with things but still she fixed him with magnetic eyes that locked him to the floor. As he breathing quickened, his loose jacket began to rise and fall on his shoulders. He felt the bulge in his inside pocket where he had stuffed his wallet and his passport. He had no intention of playing Alison’s game any longer than he had to. He screwed up his eyes for a moment, took a deep breath and asked the question: “Where?”

"Have you heard of Takeo Nakamura?  Developer in Tokyo?"  No.  "Well, he`s on his way to jail - got caught paying bribes.  Right now he`s contemplating his sins on his private island.  We think there may be an opportunity to purchase the island."  You want me to go there?  "Maybe.  While he`s still there.  He operates a small resort - seven or eight rooms only, guests of his choosing."  And you think you can get me in?  "Some things you should know before you agree to go.  Nakamura`s a nudist - it`s a nudist resort.  His title to the land may not be transferable; we`ll have to cozy up to the local government.  I want you to go because you know them - the island is legally part of Tannu Tuva.  And one more thing:  Elaine`s already there.  You`ll pose as her husband.  That`s what gets you in."
This morning, he had been preparing to resign.  Now, Alison was asking him to go to his least favorite place, with his least favorite person.  He sat in silence.  He slipped the passport out of his pocket and looked idly at the embossed cover.

Don`t like to post this really, it`ll mess up the flow,
 
but, if I don`t put it back on the home page,
 
It might be lost forever!
 
I never have read much, so it`s kinda ironic really,
that just when I`m actually starting to get hooked on a new book,
the bloody authors, suddenly stop writing it!
 
Ahhhhh, ..... life is hard, and then you die!
 
What gets me though,
is how the hell do you ALL know the SAME story! :)
I think you all must be telepathic, lol :)
 
Anyway, I was enjoying it, so, com`on chaps!
 
Hurry up and write some more!
