RE: California Desert

Hello, read your post and it seems that you were hiking near Ocotillo at the same time that I was driving through the area. I travel frequently to SD and never thought of stopping there to hike, but I am always game. Can you suggest a spot? Or if you want company, just let me know. D

RE: California Desert

I was on a work assinment in El Centro had only one afternoon for hiking.
I hiked just north of Ocotillo off of Hwy S2. The trail head parking was at the end of (dirt road) 093. The trail leads into the "Coyote Mountains Fossil Site ACEC. The trail head and road are shown on a map given out at the Office of Land Management in El Centro (BLM Routes of Travel for Western Imperial County)
093 is not well marked. If traveling north, on S2, and you come to a small Border Patrol station, you have gone one dirt road too far.
There are three parking lots there. Two of them are for gun enthusiasts with shooting ranges and the last one is the trail head. Information kiosk is in disrepair. The trail in not well marked, but I followed foot prints.
I did not make it to the fossils, but I made it to a summit on a ridge that looked eastward and could see the Salton Sea. I saw no one on the trail. Two SUVs in the parking lot though. They hiked further out than I did.
