Why Practice Nude?

Return to Discussions

I'd love to hear from my fellow nude yogis, why the addition of nudity to your practice?
Many of my students are first time nudists and first time yogis. What brings you to the space?

RE: Why Practice Nude?

Hi there,
I'd love to do nude yoga in a group, but there are no classes here (netherlands). So I do practice yoga in the nude at home. Gives a feeling of freedom and being one with your self.
I wander though, how distracting it would be doing it in a group??
love,
Alex

Clothes sometimes get in the way, and I also enjoy being able to see my muscles and connective tissues while I am in poses. Yoga without textiles is so simple and easy feeling. I am now a certified yogi, but previous to my training I have led yoga at nude gatherings in wv.

RE: Why Practice Nude?

Nude yoga allows an openness of spirit and body that remains somewhat restricted while clothed.
Many people think nude yoga would be distracting but ,as with all 'new' nude activities, after a short time the fact that the woman or man next to you is naked doesn't register.
Men worry they'll get an erection in a situation where there's no easy way to disguise it. In fact, though erections do occur, most yogis are more focused on what their own body and breath is doing to even be aware or care about whats happening with the person next to them. That being said, the energy created in a space filled with nude yogis is incredibly healing, restorative and transformative in a way I rarely find in a clothed group.
As a teacher it allows one to see proper form and alignment and body tension or strain more clearly and to facilitate better connection between mind,
body and spirit.

RE: Why Practice Nude?

I can't think of a more natural way to be than nude while practicing yoga. Yoga is a form of meditation, and uses the asanas, the poses, as the focus. It clears the mind of distractions and develops the body at the same time. Clothing is restrictive, and can shift or bind because it does not stretch in the same way that the body does. Binding clothing is a distraction, and disrupts the focus of the yoga session.
In the nude yoga sessions that I have attended, the work is focused and there is no time to pay any attention to what others are doing. They're nude, we're all nude, and it's not an issue. And if the workout is intense enough, there's not much time to look around, or worry whether anyone else is.

For myself, yoga has always been about "coming back to ones center". This could be in the context of ones own body, all the way to ones position in the context of the whole universe.
In the end, I feel more in tune with my body and the environment around me, and it feels great.Time slows down, the world melts away, and there is no "external resistance" (of which I would count clothes) to this effort.Having done yoga (in a class) and nude yoga (privately) I would far prefer the nude option (if such were possible in a class setting).
Having done both, it does not feel quite right (EG: feeling blocked) when doing it clothed now.
