About

Spring at Rooster Rock is where spring fever happens. Imagine the first warm, sunny days of spring where meadows of wild roses and the spicy scent of Oregon grape combine with an endless panorama of the Cascade mountains, blue sky and the deep blue waters of the Columbia River. During the first sunny days of spring, people suddenly call in sick at work or school. That's when our parking lot fills up! One of the largest swimming areas near Portland serves visitors who want a natural experience. It's even more natural the farther east you go at Rooster Rock (where you'll find one of Oregon's two designated nude beaches). By design, the nude beach area is completely separate and not visible from the clothing-required area of the large park. The two areas coexist in harmony.

Great view, bad reputation

I think I have a nickname for this park -- The Park of 1000 Trails. You could almost get lost to and from the beach -- a beautiful hike no matter which trails you choose. Unfortunately, many of the minor trails through the woods end in small clearings for a simple reason: this nude beach is a notorious location for gay hook-ups. I decided to give this beach the benefit of the doubt; it had a bad reputation, but I was willing to give it a try. The hike in was long but relaxing... very beautiful setting. One great advantage this location has over the nearby Collins Beach on the other side of Portland is the relative privacy. Collins is very popular during the summer and gets a lot of clothed gawkers. Although the reputation for gay cruising turned out to be true, I saw no sexual activity in the open -- so at least they are discreet. Plus, I was only propositioned twice. Then again, I`m not really very attractive. Once, a single man tried to signal non-verbally his willingness to sneak off a trail. The other time, when I did not respong to the second man`s non-verbal signals, he walked up to me and told me what he`d like to do to me. Rather ribald, I`d say. All in all, the trip was not too bad. The negative aspects are not so bad that they cannot be overlooked. I enjoyed the scenery, the hike (despite the mosquitos when I hiked back out that evening), and my time spent reading a book on the shore.

Pros

Beautiful natural setting, Nice hike to and from beach, Private atmosphere

Cons

Earned its reputation as a gay cuising location
