About Wreck Beach

The Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS) began January 25, 1977, with the assault on Wreck Beach by authorities without public input. This assault by bulldozers and massive dredges, catapulted the beach to fame when beach users formed a small group called Citizens Concerned for Coward's Cove, which then changed to the Wreck Beach Committee, which again evolved into the Wreck Beach Preservation Society in 1983. Over the years this ad hoc group of citizens have fought numerous attempts by conservative University of British Columbia (UBC) administrations to pave, bury, or destroy the beach and cliffs under the guise of erosion control. Although the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) took over stewardship from the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation in 1989, UBC began lobbying and is still trying to pressure the GVRD to be a good neighbor and protect UBC buildings too near the cliffs' edge through massive erosion-control works. It appears 1998 will be the year these works or strategies for initiating and implementing these works--with public input--will mark the beginning of combined efforts. A massive slide on September 25, 1997 behind the Cecil Green Mansion Coach House, a heritage UBC building, has accelerated the emergency work which will be necessary behind the building. The WBPS believes the building should be moved, and perhaps bioengineering done just immediately below the site until a comprehensive plan involving Wreck Beach users can be proposed between Northwest Marine drive cliffs and those at the Trail 4 section of Wreck Beach. Authorities would have the public believe that Wreck Beach is only that beach at the base of Trail 6, but the WBPS has--for years--adamantly stated our mandate which is: To preserve the Wreck Beach area, including foreshore and cliffs, in as nearly a natural state as possible from Spanish Banks West to the Musqueam Reserve!

Breif Afternoon
Reviewed on : June 26th 2011
Date of Stay : June 20th 2011

Had a really good relaxed afternoon on the beach with my partner. There were quite a few clothed people there, but plenty nude too. Everyone seemed very relaxed and friendly, I would love to go back!

Pros
Chilled, relaxed, great scenery

Cons
Few too may clothed people

One of World's Best Naturist Beaches

Wreck Beach is such a wonderful place with a great mixture of young and old. It has an atmosphere all of its own that draws you in and makes you feel like you are in another world altogether. It is great to see such a wonderful spot within the limits of a major Canadian City.

Pros
Just one of the best places for naturism in the world

Cons
Need some stamina to climb the stairs

Wrech Beach ... fantastic
Reviewed on : January 07th 2009

First liberating nudist experience here, found such great freedom. Of the 3 areas (Towers, Gate 6, Gay) I prefer the “Towers” side, [between the gun towers and Spanish Banks] as it is more private and feel quite safe. Easy 15 minute walk from Spanish Banks parking lot, instead of hiking down steep stairs at gate 6. When tide is out, fantastic sands stretching for miles, check tide calendars to maximize. Best time of year July to Labour Day, not as many shadows over the beach. Beautiful sunsets, magnificent views of mountains and City of Vancouver. Not as windy. As this is a ‘clothing optional’ beach with posted signs expect lots of clothed tourists, just ignore them - they are the ones that look out of place. Beware that in late August 100’s of smelt fisherman string their ropes and nets across the beaches during high tides. I go to Towers after 2:00pm and stay ‘til the sun sizzles into the ocean and therefore can stay all day in the sun and not get burnt. This beach is best thing in my life to experience. There is an error with the map shown - this might be the Wreck Beach administrative office, the actual beach is about 5 miles west of the map, along 4th Avenue, follow signs posted for Jericho Beach then along Marine Drive to the last parking lot.

Pros
beautiful scenry, miles of sands, respectful people, safe

Cons
smelt fishermen in late August.

Wreck beach

This was my first ever social nudism experience. And I must say it was very positive, a very busy and interesting beach. Once I disrobed I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

Pros
Lots of friendly people, very respectful of others and the environment.

Cons
Too many textile folk, if you are going to a beach like this, then lose the clothes!!!
