I wrote this a few years and felt that it was time to re-post this again for another generation of college students...Motivation has a strong influence on how well you do your job.Students often develop a “slave mentality”.That is they see themselves performing tasks which are required by their teachers, but which are utterly meaningless to them. In contrast, students who see how their schoolwork fits into their plans for themselves become willing workers. It is quite true that “you can do anything you want to do” because wanting makes the necessary work easy. Determination to work does not mean the same as motivation. “Will power” will not work over a lengthy period of time. You can force yourself on occasion, but there are definite limits to the success of such an approach."How to gain Motivation"Decide what you are trying to do in college. Find out exactly how you go achieving what you want. With this info, you can avoid a lot of “wheel spinning” Make college your job. Don’t let the incidental business of earning extra $$$, and leading an active social life interfere with your central task of getting through college. Real students take care of their books, have a suitable place to work and keep their materials nearby. Most distractions come from within you. Most problems yield to direct action and you must do the acting. Set short range goals. Analyze your study task-What do you want to accomplish, and how can it best be done. Set a definite time limit. Work expands to fit the time available with you getting as much done in 2 hours as you can in 8 hours. Evaluate your success or failure."Personal College study plan"Read the chapter prior to class, take notes and record the lecture. Complete all assignments and extra credit. Rewrite notes for clarification. Be assertive-Ask questions in class. The school computer labs are generally open 24/7, take advantage of them and very importantly-find the library and make it your second home on campus. Well have fun and enjoy the trip in college. The education in the long run becomes worth more than just dollars and cents......
