To me it is extremely odd. Unless the person is way out of shape or something that looks very bad, I don't understand why so many men are repulsed by male nudity.  On the other hand, some people I guess could simply be repulsed by the human body. I don't know. Also are there any straight men who appreciate the beauty of male nudity?  There is a nice picture for this group. It is quite attractive. I don't find it sexually attractive. I just like it. I live in a society where men claim they can't tell (as if they are blind) if a person of the same gender is attractive or not. I mean men here. Females comment on each other's beauty all the time. But going beyond that, being nudists (If you've ever spent a lot of time nude and you are straight) do you "notice," "appreciate," find "attractive," or however you would describe it--the male form? Someone had to pick the picture for this discussion group. I don't assume it had to be a gay person. If straight, that picture appealed to that person for some particular reason.Since I'm not completely straight, I find this really hard to understand the various responses people give on the topic.  My feelings are obviously different.Does anyone have anything to share about this? It would be helpful to discuss it. I understand that this group being a bunch of nudists are sometimes in the same boat in that they accept nudity and wonder why people don't feel more comfortable. Either way, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I believe that it's a societal conditioning against anything that could be perceived as gay feelings or being gay-positive and it's been allowed to become feared and this has been self-perpetuating.
For too long being queer / homosexual was was seen as unacceptable and deviant, illegal and driven out of sight of mainstream society and was absolutely discouraged as less than masculine (after all if we didn't want to have sex with a woman we must want to take her place - TOTALLY untrue).
There is a gradual sea-change occurring which should remove the Victorian era fascination with what happens in the bedrooms but here in Australia major religions like Catholicism are allowed to indoctrinate every schoolchild against equality. I regret to say but until society moves at least two further generations away from the 19th Century then this will still be engrained.
I also think that this repulsion is over-stated in public situations than in private; a straight guy on a nudist beach would not allow himself to be seen looking at any male with any interest but it's less likely to be an issue if he was showering at the gym with relatively little chance of being observed.
If only every household could be nudist; in textile households children learn to put on many layers of unnecessary morals and inhibitions with their clothes. Without that the enforced covering up children raised in a nudist household can be taught the tools to make sensible decisions about their adult behaviour and subsequent lifestyle.
And the male body can be admired for it's aesthetic values rather than sniggered at by men who fear their own thoughts.
I think here in England we are fearful of being labelled gay are so are conditioned not to comment about a guys good looks or attractiveness. Although being gay is now completely acceptable, nevertheless there are some people who still think that being gay is less than normal.
As for the picture on this group, I think it's a very good one. I think both guys are semi-erect which makes it even nicer!

Straight men don't find nudity repulsive, but some do have intense fears that acknowledging the beauty of another man is going to label them.  Hence you hear stupid things like, "I'm not interested personally, but he is a very attractive man." or "If I were inclined that way, I would be attracted to him"  What kind of nonsense is this double speak.  Men are attractive like women are attractive, and vice-versa. I believe that we all would be better served to just accept that beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
People view homosexuality as normal in England? I know that has happened in quite a few European countries. I didn't know England was one of them.
Beauty in the eyes of the beholder... DEFINITELY! , but despite the beauty in all of us, many men are brought up and thought that to admire another man's beauty is immoral, just not right. A sad state of affairs indeed. Michael Angelo, dá Vinci and many others glorified the beauty of the male body in their paintings. For centuries these masterpieces containing male bodies, male anatomies have been glorified by many, men and women alike. Nevertheless, to admire another fellow man in this day in age have been considered "absurd" or abnormal, when the admiration comes from another man... Don't get it. Hopefully the time would come in the future when we can apply the true admiration of the male body, as it have been done centuries ago!
Really nice points.  I really like your logic!  Thanks for sharing!

My experience and opinion is that those straight guys who find the male nude repulsive or, are embarrassed to see that male genitalia are conditioned to think that to admire, is to be 'gay".  Even to admire the artistic nude of a Greek statue is cause for alarm. In Italy where nude statuary abounds, the Catholic Church (which acquired so much of it) has double standards.   Is it because the status are the ideal male and real nude guys come in all shapes, sizes and ages? The answer is multifaceted.  Fear, embarrassment, envy and disgust are all reasons.

I think it stems from insecurity and internalized homophobia.  I think nude men look great, just being MALE.   I am not sexually attracted to every man I see, but I can observe and appreciate the male physique,  I can tell a guy "great abs!" or "Great ass!" and  be totally non-sexual about it.  I am just telling that they look good, and it is appreciated.

I guess it have to be something woth the region, because here where I live (Bulgaria and Turkey) it is okay to do at least half of these things. Well if you make a comment like " you have very beutiful penis" people will look at you a bit odd, but making a compliment about abs for example is perfectly fine. Or to tell a friend that he looks better with beard for example is also perfectly fine. In fact you can see many guys holding their friends over on their shoulder. Holding hands on the other hand is not regarded so normal. But in the end here guys camaraderie is a norm.

"time to get rid of these tired old  stereotypes  , at the end of the day if you think someone  looks good just let them know"agree on both counts. no longer care if others misjudge me. So much more comfortable.personally it seems to me that it is time we spoke of male or female and simply leave it at that. I thin the greater majority of males and females are bi.
I have to agree  with almost everything you  say and whilst I identify  as a Gay Man  I am also aware  that sexuality is a lot more fluid  we are after all human beings  and cannot always determine who we will  be sexually attracted to, or  even fall in love with  , I know of men and women  who have been  in Heterosexual relationships and then had a   relationship with someone  of the same sex  ,and I also know of a gay man who  now has a relationship   with a woman, and I'm disappointed that although they  both  faced an awful lot of  prejudice  from many on  the gay scene in their  city  , despite the fact that  both of them had been  on the gay scene for years  and had always supported LGBT   equality  ........  outrageous  !

I see that the conversation drifted from the original post and now
returned. Interesting. I see the point about straight men being
fearful of finding a male body attractive but I think that part of
the problem is the way the West has coopted nudity as strictly
sexual and we have bought into the commodity model. We are very
insecure and we don't like it if someone else is comfortable in
their own skin. Beautiful naked men are vehicles to sell stuff. If
I don't measure up to the standard seen in adverts I should be
covered in a gunny sack, and then so should everybody else. This isn't unique to straight men, BTW. I have
heard many gay men argue that saggy old dudes such as myself should quit
going naked too (it hurts their eyes, I suppose because they have
to face that their sculpted beauty is not forever). Buying into
consumer culture has a range of ills and I think that guys
acknowledging each others' bodies as they are is one of them.

Yes sorry Alfresco  , I'm sorry I might have been one of the people  responsible  for making the conversation drift a  bit,You make a lot of valid points  , Especially  the fact that   Many Men on the gay scene have serious  issues regarding their body image,  Guys go to the gym and  work out and still don't feel that they're  Muscular enough, I have friends who do this, , sadly this is now something that a lot of straight guys are now doing  , It's  terrible sad that  some men  don't feel good about their bodies .The point I would have to  take issue with is that you mention men on the gay scene  seeing your body as  " saggy " or "old " going by your profile pics you have a great body and you should take every opportunity  to be  naked because  you look fantastic

Well, I like being naked and like seeing others being naked. I think the biggest reason some guys are that way are the way they were brought up, especially the ones that are raised by mom. If I had my way it would be required to be naked, weather permitting. I am already striping when I go threw the door at the locker room at the guy and only carry a small towel to sit on. Some of the older guys do the same. I think they call us trolls, but that has nothing to do with it, I makes me feel good to have others take a good look, even though I know that I don't really look that good anymore.  I was raised very prudishly and it took a while to get over it. There have been several occasions where people have asked to see mine, and I say sure if I can see yours. I have no hang ups about it in the last 45 years, I have even had a couple to want to touch it, and that's ok with me too. Maybe I am over permissive but I just feel we are all made the same just different shapes and sizes, so what does it matter. People don't realize how much baggage they are carrying around with the fears of someone seeing them, once they get the guts to try it they usually like me and don't want to put clothes back on.  Mike

"Any Idea why Straight Men find Nudity Repulsive?"

My theory is that much of it has to do with homophobia.  They don't want to be an object of desire to another man; they are afraid that if they are an object of sexual desire to another man, that somehow means that something about them reads "gay" and since they perceive "gay" to be a bad thing, deviant or abnormal, that means they're deviant or abnormal.
Just looking at the pictorial history of Males in the USA,.., you can actually see the idea that it's no big deal in the mid to late 1800,..., to the now homophobic environment that we live in today. Just the Male swim suit a lone tells the tale. In the 1920-30-40-and even 50's swim suits were briefs, then the moral majority shows up in the mid 60's and the rest is history. Nude swim contests in the HS and YMCA where you can see clothed females watching the swim. NOW!? OH HELL NO!. The Sexual Revolution of the 1970's brought about too many negatives to keep the Male form as admired. Everything from women's lib to HIV has made the Male Human form a very unsavory thing sorry to say. Face it,..., we're not that kings of anything in the USA Society now,..., diminished beyond belief. It is why I have left the mainstream and follow my Ways and Robert Bly among other Male Movements writers and leaders.

Pictures tell the story tho.
I honestly do not think straight men or men in general are repulsed by nude men...I think in many ways they are jealous because they are not comfortable in there own skin...deep down they wish they had the ball to show there naked body.

Well some of this goes back to one of the Popes in the 1500 or earlier who went around the Vatican with a hammer and chisel and chiseled off the penis and scrotum of all the nude male statues in the vatican because he thought they were too revealing and promoted lustful thoughts. That is number one.
Today, a lot of str8 men, not all of them, fear being labeled as gay friendly if they acknowledge their approval of or state that another man is very attractive.
Being a gay man I like to compliment someone who I think is very attractive, being female or male. It is just a compliment does not mean I want to jump into bed with you, but it is simple compliment on how well you look.

Yet another situation where generalizations are odious. I disagree with the title statement though understand the cultural influence.
I know of gay blokes who would not be seen nude in a fit. Should we general use from that? No

I know other s8 guys myself included who can see beauty in a human body. Should we generalize from that. No

I do however believe that most humans are bi and that it is circumstance that effects us. Perhaps some who realize that try to deflect any "suspicion" by verbalizing comments contrary to their true feelings and hence we hear or see behavior that could be interpreted as being repulsed by the naked body.
Lets get over it. Ws are all created in God's likeness. Let's celebrate that.
