The average penis is 5.5"(~13cm) for the US and for the world. Personally I'd think anything over 7" long would be considered large. Statistics show less than 3% of men in the world have a penis over 7". I never considered myself large until I was talking about with my wife about it back in my mid 20s. I honestly had no idea back then what the average size was for men. I am 8" long and 5.75" around and compared to my body is doesn't look that big so I didn't really think I was all that big, but then again I'm a big guy, so for it to look big against my body I'd need to be 10-12" lol.

I think you have articulated this quite well. I believe it's entirely possible that some men remain unaware or simply do not realize they possess a large penis. This lack of awareness can often be attributed to the relative perception of one's own body. As you mentioned, the size can appear different depending on the proportions of the rest of a man's physique. A well-built frame might make the size seem less pronounced, while a slimmer build could enhance the perception of size, creating a spectrum of awareness and perception among individuals.
