Outdoor shower
Return to DiscussionsHad to resort to showering indoors this week. Cold, windy and rain off and on. I've got some decisions to make with the outdoor shower. I currently have a 7gal water heater and it's barely enough for both of us to take a proper shower. A rinse off shower is fine but for us to soap up, wash or hair, I end up finishing with cold water and in winter, that's just asking too much! hahahaI'm considering a tankless water heater but the place for it is tight. I could just buy a larger water heater, maybe 10 gals but I like the idea of a tankless with unlimited hot water.Any thoughts and suggestions on what you have and how it's working out?
We have a tankless one, but it is a camping one that you hook up to a propane tank and a garden hose rather than piping it to a natural gas line or wiring into your electric system. They run around $200-250 new, although ours came with the site we bought at Solair along with a nice shower platform to hang it on. Wish we could use it at home, but our yard doesn't have close to the privacy needed for outdoor nude use (hence the reason we bought a site at Solair). It works great and that is the main shower we use while at camp (we haven't even used the one in our trailer once), except for early/late season morning showers or off season when the water is turned off. Then we use the indoor showers near the pool.

I'd definitely go tankless if we had a place at our club, Glen Eden. We've seen some great decks there and the great outdoor showers many of the residents have. I think I'll go tankless for our outdoor shower here at home. It's gonna be a challenge to install and my body doesn't contort into positions I need to do this. I may have to do the "not how I wanted to do it" method and hire a plumber! LOL
WE really enjoy the communal showers at clubs and resorts. Some are expose to the outdoors and others are enclosed with sliding glass doors. Lots of room to clean up and occasionally have a friendly conversation with others.
When on am on my Wyoming property an outdoor shower or sponge bath in the kitchen are the only choices I have. I definitely prefer the shower. Not just over the sponge bath but also over conventional indoor showers. Nothing like air drying in the sun. I just use a camping solar shower now, but I am thinking about upgrading to some kind of permanent structure. It would have use solar to heat the water.
I've finally been able to resume my outdoor showers. It's still a little chilly for my wife but she'll use it after being in the hot tub. With it still being cool in the afternoons and evenings, I keep the water a little hotter than normal. With a 7 gal tank, it doesn't last too long.
We are contemplating a move in a few years. We're wondering if making some of these changes, like tankless water heater for the outdoor shower, putting in a new fence between us and the next door neighbors and putting in artificial turf in the front yard are expenses we'll recoup when we sell. Jury's still out! haha
My wife and I are polar opposites. She'd love to live someplace where it's cold and snowy in Winter or Fall. I am not a cold weather person. I hate to be cold. As I've gotten older, I'm not as comfortable in the triple digit temps but much more comfortable than temps in the 40's and 50's. I can get a bit cranky in temps in the low 60's if there are too many of them in a row.
We've had temps in the mid 20's here and its wreaked havoc on our landscaping, but we've never had pipes freeze up. I've often wondered why that hasn't happened with our pool equipment. It seems exposed enough to have that happen. Probably not exposed to those temps long enough.
