A question posed by "AANR-Ws Nudists" (@aanrwest) on Twitter
May 18If #naturism/#nudism is free from racial and sexual biases why are so many #nudists segregating themselves by skin colour or orientation?

Unlike straight white people in western countries, minorities can't walk into a room just anywhere and expect to be surrounded by people like them. Therefore, it is essential for minorities to have safe spaces where they can be themselves without being judged, stereotyped, or fetishised for their culture. Places where they can walk into the room and not feel like the odd person out who can't relate with anybody. It is important for all people to have a gathering place of community in which everyone has common ground (and, btw, "being human" is not enough).

Because nudism IS NOT free from racial and sexual and gender biases! That is a myth always has been

It is sad that there are people that still segregate. Instead of looking at what is different we should look at what we have in common. I don't base my friendship on race, skin color, or orientation.

I agree Txag but i don't see this a a friendship issue. What most nudist have in common is the joy of just being nude but beyond that, what experiences do we share? I am friends with people of all races, creeds and colors and I share certain experiences with all of them. But I share the most life experiences with other black people and for lack of a better expression, they just "get me." We can say things to each other that we don't have to explain. Now to be sure, they may not be "Friend Materiel" and I will find that I have more in common with a Chinese person but we will have to talk to find that out. Seeing another black person at a nudist venue is an anomaly so I do try to talk to them when I do see them. It may look like we are segregating but we are just trying to find out how we got over.

Really well said I couldn't have said it better. Being friends with or even married to someone of another race or culture does mean fully understand or appreciate their life experiences. That lack or awareness shows up all the time in the nudist community. Nudist resorts still hold "red neck " events and nudists still fly the confederate flag and say thats my heritage without appreciating how those kind of things land with black people. Then we turn around and say i treat everyone equally. It not equal if you dont consider the things that hurt me.

So this is how it goes. Folks say I treat everyone the same. I express something really hurt me as a black that some nudist folks do and instead of trying to learning or understand folks unfriend. Expect theblock to come next. That is the myth I refer to. So sad because as I saw someone post elsewhere the future of nudism in in the people of color. Nudism growing like gangbuster in Brazil and Mexico and other parts of Central and South America. But those people like most black people cant find space in US nudism to be themsleves.

I agree with everyone here. It's rare that we can talk about our shared experiences and receive empathy and support from non-Black peers. Women do the same thing congregating with other women and LGBTQ+ will also congregate with each other. It's how they build community so that they can support each other in a culture that sees them as a minority. Honestly, I never see any other group that this question is posed to and it's annoying that it's just Black people, and also that people don't see that asking this question of us is a trigger that we should be having our own separate groups.

Hello,

I viewed your profile and pictures and noted many pictures taken with white men; so it appears you know where to go and feel welcome. I am a white guy with a few black friends. One is a close friend and we go to Gunnison Beach here in NJ. I'm been going there 10 years, maybe more and never seen a hint of racism there. It's easy to mingle with just about everybody there.

Ever in the NYC area you are close to my home and would be welcome to stay. I enjoy having nude gay men as guest in my house.

This is how I've noticed it done at pretty much all of the naturist Gatherings I've attended, - granted they've only been the Eastern Naturist Gatherings and Gay Naturist Gatherings I've been to for many years, - where there are seminars, workshops, and classes for those that share similar interests, or want to learn about them. Whether it's writing, hiking, volleyball, wrestling, figure drawing, massage, LGBT, health, photography, board/table games, etc, the objective is to connect with fellow nudists/naturists the have the same affinity within the nudist community, not to be separate from the nudist community as a whole. As an example, I was raised Catholic, and at the forementioned Gatherings, I've attended Friday evening Shabbat services to gain some enlightenment of the Jewish faith, as it was open to all attendees and not restricted to those of the fait. Us POCs' realize that currently there are quite few of us in the nudist/naturist community, so when we do congregate it's to meet each other and connect, as sometimes we may be the only POC of any kind in a group of nudists. I hope this clarifies things a bit more. (9/14/22)
