Barriers to Bromance and Deeper Connections

Return to Discussions

I am really excited to find this group and to connect with other guys open to deeper friendships and connections. I have wanted something like this for a while, but wasn't sure where to start. While I am still starting this exploration, I have found there to be many barriers to these kinds of relationships and was curious if others have had the same experience. These barriers include:

1) Offending a buddy - talking about anything deeper or more emotional, anything outside of "safe topics," runs the risk of offending a buddy who is a good friend but not intetested in that level of connection. This is my biggest barrier.

2) Lack of emotional tools - even if a buddy wants to go deeper with a friemdship, many ot us lack the tools to go there because men (in many societies) are taught to be stoic and unconnected.

3) Fear of Judgement - even if the interest and tools are there, a bromance runs the risk of being judged in multiple ways, which may be a barrier to something deeper.

4) Lack of rolemodels - bromances can look so many different ways (I imagine), but I am aware of so few examples of this in popular culture. This may be limiting in some way.

Do these barriers to a solid bromance resonate? Are there others you have encountered?

RE:Barriers to Bromance and Deeper Connections

Many men do not have this societal hang up about the 'role' men should have with friends of any age. It takes time to find that special friend or friends. I enjoy chatting with younger men who seek answers because that never had a father figure growing up. Teachers are sometimes not approachable, sports coach' s and youth leaders have to be careful that some 'fool' takes umbridge or worse when they see an innocent friendship happening. this site will hopefully find that connection you seek.

Bromance is an open-ended term which can involve physical, spiritual and emotional intimacy. I see it as "traditional" male friendship prior to when society was filled with so much homophobia. The barriers you mention are real, but I see them more as boundaries. It's relatively easy to drop in information about enjoying naked time at home or other situations. I've challenged friends by stripping naked in "natural" settings like bathing and showering and no one has been offended, though some seemed like they found it awkward. As I see it, a sense of comfort eventually replaces the risk of vulnerability. This can also contribute to a long-term deeper connection.

My experience is these barriers are common in the clothed world. In the male nudist world they are gone. For this reason my closest friends are nudists, because none of us are afraid of each other and overstepping some societal defined boundary.

One thing I have found for sure is that casual nudity together with your bromance helps in the bonding greatly. I sure has for me and a close nudist friend. When we get together clothed at first and then get our clothes off and we are nude with each other a natural closeness happens and can begin with a long nude hug.
