Hiking the e4 trail in Crete

Return to Discussions

Last spring I hiked the e4 trail along Southern Crete from the parking lot of Elafonissi to Palaiochora and back wearing only shoes and a small backpack with water and snacks. It was a beautiful hike with only a couple of challenging places to climb. Along the way I passed maybe 60 textile hikers. Each smiled or said hello. No one seemed to mind that I was naked. If ever in Southern Crete I highly recommend a nude hike.

E4 Trail from Elafonissi to Palaiochora must have been wonderful. I really appreciate hearing that you were able to hike this section nude without incident as I hope to hike parts of the E4 on Crete, perhaps as early as next summer.

I've walked nude along the E4 between Kedrodasos just East of Elafonisi as far as Viena beach where you start to meet the road again although usually fairly deserted at this point. Once you reach Krios you are still about 9 km from Palaiochora (often written Paleochora) and you have to do a lot of that on the fairly busy paved road walking past houses etc. I would have thought that walking from Elafonisi to Krios and back was reasonable. Are you sure you went all the way to Palaiochora?
Going in the other direction you could walk from Gialiskari naturist beach to the ancient site of Lissos. I would put on some clothes as I get close to Lissos but maybe you're more daring than me. I've never tried to walk nude between Lissos and Sougia because the route is relatively busy but if you passed all those textiles on the way from Elafonisi without a problem then you might be OK between Lissos and Sougia as well. Sougia has a great naturist beach only a little way from the village centre.
