Nude Gardeners

A group for fellow gardeners from around the world.

After 15 or so years, a butterfly bush didn't make it back after the winter. We just planted a new one as well as several Black Barrow bulbs that I started in a container this past November. They are very happy since the Black Barrow has a number of deep purple buds and the butterfly bush is starting to flower.

Went to Lowe's to look at their reduction table and found a purple butterfly bush in dear need of TLC. I brought it home (5 gal. container) at a $6 price and started watering it. Planted it with Miracle Grow garden soil, and it is thriving nicely. Since we cut down some trees, I have more sunny space to plant and just placed a large order for spring blooming Holland bulbs (I'm the chairperson for the bulb committee at my religious congretation & mail order is available - shameless plug).

RE: New plantings

I like butterfly bushes but I have a hard time getting them to overwinter here. I can usually only get a couple of years before our cold winters knock them out. Also, the hummingbirds seem to really like them as well.
