Creating a new vegetable garden

Return to Discussions

I will be outside digging up a new area to prepare the ground for some winter vegetables. I live on a few private acres in the bush that allows me to be nude a lot. Im new to the area so having people just dropping in is not something that would happen often. I wonder if either of my neighbors are nudists. Be nice if they were, maybe they might come over to investigate the activity of gardening nude. Hope so

I did exactly the same this morning! On the other side of the country - WA, only 5 acres, reasonably private, my happy place to be comfortable!

Not yet prepping for the spring planting but Im still getting last springs crops. I planted four tomato plants & four pepper plants in large pots last year. These were the two to four gallon size so somewhat substantial. The respective veggies did ok during the season and kept slowly producing into the fall & winter. The 20F degree temps of a couple of weeks ago necessitated putting the plants in the shop with heat lamps but they all survived. And, Im still getting tomatoes & peppers from those same plants. The bell & banana peppers have actually done better this winter than the summer. Im still picking & eating as they ripen. Im actually a little curious about how they will produce this spring since theyre already established. Anybody else tried this routine?

We are starting to plan our Spring garden. Hopefully potatoes will go in the ground in a couple of weeks, Then we will probably plant onions right behind, Next should be the corn and other summer veggies in March

My winter garden is cabbage & collards. I didnt plant a huge plot but put eight of each in my garden. The cabbages have been very slow to head up but the collards have done reasonably well. I have gathered the bottom leaves from all the plants twice to augment store purchases from Wallys. Just the adding of the home grown adds a lot of flavor. Everyone enjoys the greens when served so I take it my recipe works.

It's so nice to hear so much positivity in this thread today after the close to dismal veggie gardening we dealt with last year. Thanks for the boost! Makes me want to go look at some seed catalogues ~

A few years ago I potted up a habanero plant into a 5 gal bucket at the end of the growing season and plopped it on the fireplace hearth where it got a couple hours of sun most days during the winter. It surprisingly made it through without too much struggling, lost a bunch of leaves but held on and got re-planted in the garden when temps allowed in the spring. But honestly, the plants from the same seed that next year caught up with that one plant by end of that second summer, so I can't say that it was worth the challenge of moving and watering it all through the winter. I think most if not all hot peppers are biennial, so depending on where you live, a second year of production seems like a sensible story ~ but not so much in Virginia. It was entertaining to answer the questions from people who came to the house - "Is that a pepper plant in December?!?!?"

I couldnt agree with you more on the *adding comments* to a post. It just takes a few moments to add your story to the group & it makes for a much better read. Maybe we can start a trend?
