Are Nudists Happier Than Textiles?

Return to Discussions

In terms of self-esteem, body image, etc. including other things along those lines, I'd think that nudists have a better acceptance of their bodies than the average person possibility. What do you think?

I totally agree. Since becoming a full time nudist/naturist, I am happier in my body than ever before. I just feel more alive.

Happiness is a rather subjective term, whereas things like stress and anxiety are easier to qualify. Since stress is stored in the body, exposing the body is a means of exposing and thereby reducing stress. Once article that gives a good overview of this is from Psychology Today called "Where Do You Store Stress in Your Body? Top 10 Secret Areas". It offers group therapy as a remedy which I won't discount. However, there's a simple therapy in removing clothes, especially in a group setting, which can be simple, effective and inexpensive therapy. It's simply easier to don't worry, be happy when your balls or boobs are hanging as nature intended. Because it's hard to patent and easy to use nudism as an excuse for real problems, society is likely to continue to undervalue or dismiss it. But we know better and are in good company, aren't we?

I just posted this on another post and it is worth repeating:

A study in Britain found found nudists have "greater life satisfaction" "more positive body image" and "higher self-esteem."
Research: Nudists are happier and more satisfied with life

I think that happiness is higher in people who live according to the values they have personally cultivated. Nudists actually act on a value that is counter to societal norms. This probably helps with a sense of control of their lives that they can personally take credit for (rather than what society has told them they should be content with). I see similar higher levels of happiness in nonnudists who have carved out their own unique way of expressing into the world.

As far as research, the article points out that higher self esteem/happiness to begin with may lead people to explore naturism. There are probably socioeconomic factors which need to be explored. Naturists tend to be middle class and above members of the dominant ethnic group, so any study that ignores matching by SES is suspect.
