It's absolutely accessible with a standard car. Obviously, with the dirt roads you have to take it carefully, and an AWD makes it easier, but I have done it in a Mazda 121, so just about anything will do so long as you don't have stupidly low suspension. If you go during one of the big weekends (New Years, Easter, Anzac Day, there will be more people than otherwise. I hope to get there next in September. We prefer when it's quieter.
