Your reaction was the same as my good ladies back in the late 70's. By that time I had been smooth since mid 70's thanks to my Japanese Gf at the time, she had little to nothing in the pubic hair department and me being a European male had a full bush. I blame her for wanting to see what I looked like with the same amount of pubes as her for getting me started.
At the time I was in the Merchant Navy with no on-suit facilities, but a communal shower that had no curtains, so when showering we all could see all. A few comment the next few days from my fellow engineers, but strange that out of the 5 of us using the showers 2 others tried it and both admitted later it felt better especially working as we did out in the Far East. The hot Engine Room dd not help.
It did not take my now wife of 40+ years to ask me to shave her as she was not confident in doing it herself.
So it has been that we are both smooth and prefer it that way.

Who'd have thought that. Japanese women today (at least in porn) are known for sporting a full bush. I am not surprised she convinced you though and that you kept it. It does feel better.
