Until recently, as of 2002, the inaccessible roads to Dreamland made the beach a secret haven primarily known to surfers and budget backpackers. Years of political scandal which involved the corrupt son of the second President of Indonesia, Suharto, resulted in the government selling most of the land to private, foreign developers. As of 2010, the once primitive paradise is considered a newer and more upscale version of Kuta, with luxurious hotels, beach-front restaurants, spas and shopping centers.
Dreamland is located at the southern tip of Bali in a region known as the Bukit peninsula; it's approximately 30 minutes from downtown Kuta. Bukit translates as hill and is specifically known for its hash, infertile limestone plateau with world-class surf breaks. Dreamland is the first of many beaches, including Uluwatu and Padang Padang, where surfers test their skills against massive waves formed by shore breaks. Dubbed as the new Kuta, the beach primarily attracts day-trippers from nearby Kuta or Nusa Dua, Jakarta elites and vacationing Australians seeking to unwind and enjoy the white-sand beach.
