• Kehena - The Epitomy of Lower Puna

  I've been in love with Kehena since I moved to Lower Puna on April 1, 2017. It is one of the important Sunday Funday spots where locals congregate. Lower Puna would not be the same without it. It's been clothing-optional for decades now, so even though, like the rest of the beaches in Hawai'i, it is not legally clothing-optional, the authorities basically ignore it.

  Pros: Kehena is an exquisite, very laid-back and relaxed beach where, like the rest of Lower Puna, people pretty much do what they like without interference.

  Cons: The rip currents can be dangerous. People drown here every year, so before jumping in the water, observe how the waves and currents are when you come.

  Delightful black sand beach. Frequently the resident spinner dolphins come within swimming distance and frolick around the swimmers. Long standing reputation as a nude (clothing optional) beach. Due to the steep trail the beach is not visible from the highway or any residences. Sunday mornings host a drumming circle. Drumming, music, dancing and nudists. Nearby Hawaii Lalala clothing optional guest house offers 10% discount on rooms to members of truenudists. www.hawaiilalala.com. They also host Men's Nudist Adventure retreats and gatherings several times a year.

  Pros: Secluded. Established clothing optional. Spinner dolphins. Shade areas. Nudity supportive community. Warm temperatures year around (cooling tropical breezes). Inexpensive B&B and guest house rooms nearby at Hawaii Lalala Guest House.

  Cons: steep trail down to beach. sun goes beyond the cliff around 3pm - plenty of light, but no direct sun for tanning. Busy on Sundays.
