I was in a department store earlier today and I noticed a sign that said Mens Essentials on the wall over the area containing underwear and sleepwear.
I can't think of many things that I view as less essential than these.
Who would agree with me?
I too wear socks at times. Ive seen posts where people say they may put a shirt on if its getting to cold. For me, its my feet. If Im getting chilled and dont want to turn up the heat, putting socks on usually does the trick.
My rear and crotch get cold first, then feet, then chest and back. Therefore, as the weather gets cooler, I put on shorts, then socks or slippers, and then a shirt. I rarely wear long slacks at home. Legs don't seem to get cold.
Jammies and thick socks are a must to sleep in up here in the winter. Heat will dry you out and or cost a fortune where I live. Mens Essentials,,, Liquor.
Not necessarily. I even walk barefoot in the snow to get to the mailbox or take the trash out. I have my naked time with the thermostat set at 68 to 70 depending on the room, and sleeping nude has been the course even with a night of forty-below. You just need a good blanket and our heated floors help with cold feet.
What is underwear? Not worn for years. Sleepwear? Have slept in my birthday suit since being 12 years old. Is this not the norm?
How did your parents react to you sleeping nude? Were either of them nude sleepers also?

There was a post a while back that someone arrived at a clothing optional resort and walked in nude, bringing only car keys and a toiletries case. Gives a new meaning to the concept of bare essentials.
I actually like wearing pajamas during the winter time. I can't sleep in them but for lounging around the house they are great. I may be a nudist but I don't see a point of wasting electricity to heat my home just to be nude.
I use sweat pants instead.
I have no idea why anyone would want to own any sleepwear it seems very strange to me how someone could get undressed then put on other clothes for sleeping in.
In the US, the most common thing for men to do is remove their outer clothing and sleep in their underwear. I gather that is not a common practice in the UK. From what I have read here and elsewhere, most men there either sleep nude or in some kind of sleepwear.
I have a couple of sets of pajamas. I have no idea where they are. I think minimalist75 is right about us Americans. I sleep in underwear or naked. I am naked most often.
I don't have underwear or pajamas so I always sleep naked.
When I stopped wearing winter weight pajamas, I kept one pair for cool mornings but soon decided to wear sweats on those occasions.
Similarly when I switched to boxers, I kept one pair of summer weight pj's for when I was sharing a bedroom with someone beside my wife.
I soon decided to use gym shorts instead.

They both got buried in one of my drawers.
I eventually found them. By the time I did, I probably hadn't worn either of them for at least 10 years, probably longer for the heavy ones.
It still felt great to give them away and know that I had no more sleepwear.

Was back in the same store yesterday. Sleepwear display was much than 2 months ago, as expected when spring is approaching. However the space is now full of swimsuits. Probably more needed than sleepwear or underwear because there are few places that you can't swim without one, but still far from essential.

Area devoted to sleepwear was further reduced and another department store had almost eliminated theirs. I would be great if this means that more men are sleeping nude now that the weather is getting warmer. Some certainly are, but I suspect that the more common move is from sleepwear to underwear!

Mens essentials I take to mean underpants are essential items for maintaining hygiene.

Id change my underwear more than I change my trousers.

An essential is "a thing that is absolutely necessary" so those store signs and store designations are just marketing BS.

As far as clothing, a pair of shorter inseam shorts, a t-shirt, and maybe a pair of sandals are the essentials. Even the sandals are optional most of the time but the shorts and shirt keep me out of trouble when I am out in public or when we have visitors at home. Underwear or sleepwear has never been essential.

    I agree with you.
Underwear or sleepwear has never been essential.
I don't even own underwear. But there was a time when underwear served a greater purpose than it does today. Used to be that men (in town, at least) nearly always wore suits. Suits were difficult to clean. A man might only own one suit. If he had two, the newer one was worn to church or for special occasions. Regardless, they were not washed very often. Underwear formed a barrier between the person and the suit -- to absorb moisture/fluids and odors. Underwear was easy to wash. No problem putting on a fresh set each week. Cuffs and collars were removable from shirts -- they could be cleaned while the shirt itself was worn over and over again.

Once I retired, I got rid of all of my suits and underwear. I did keep one blazer for dress up occasions.

I had two suits. They had hung, unworn, in the closet for years. Gave them to a thrift store.

I still have to wear suits on a regular basis for my work. However, I decided quite a few years ago not to wear underwear any longer, no matter what. Now, even with a suit or dress pants, I go without underwear. It is not, for me at least, an essential item. I hate the restriction of wearing them more than any chafing from not wearing them.

Very few people, if any at all, in your profession could get away with not wearing a suit.
I still have to wear suits on a regular basis for my work. Be sure they are large enough to not bind and they are very much like not wearing anything at all. Silk is well very silky. Absolutely no chaffing.

Jeans were permitted on Fridays under the same conditions. I worked for an insurance company that employed several attorneys. Dress code when I left was business casual about 1/3 of the time and traditional business about 2/3 for everyone. A month after I retired, they went to full business casual for the summer and made it permanent the following September.

Went to a department store that I hadn't been to in a long time today. There was a large area in the women's department labeled sleepwear. On the men's side, there was a very small section labeled loungewear. I guess they know what men wear it for. Most of the area was occupied with flannel pants at 80% off. I guess they didn't sell well even for lounging. I saw a few shorts but no shirts. Seems to me that men who shop here must wear nothing or underwear for sleeping and a few of them may add pants or shorts for lounging.
