New to the group:USN 1971 - 1975... Boot Camp NTC San Diego. Then;stationedaboard the USS Wiltsie DD716 home port initially was 32 St Naval Station, San Diego, CA. Inlate '71 some refurbishing, weapons upgrades and deployment to RVN in early '72. Upon return from 8 month deployment where we participated in gunline duties and plane guarding the Saratoga, we were reassigned home port toTreasure Island, San Francisco Bay. Afterlittle over a year, we were again reassigned our home port to Hunter's Point, Oakland. I was a 3rd Class MM. Spent most of my time as the Engineering Dept Yoeman ... not to shabby a duty! Who says learning to type in HS doesn't pay off. 3 WestPac cruises, one tour to Vietnam in early 1972...and a trip south of the Equator to become a Shellback! ;-)

Sub School, Groton Connecticut. What a crappy place to spend a winter! 32 degrees and rainy wind off the ocean.
Advanced Electronics and Polaris Missile School in Virginia Beach, (awesome summer)
USS Proteus, Guam for 2 years. Worked 6 to 1 every day and at the beach by 2. (even more awesome).
Ford Island Ferry TAD Pearl Harbor on the stand-by ferry for 9 months awaiting orders.....uniform of the day, dungarees and flipflops only. They paid me for this!
Great Lakes for Instrument Repair and Calibration School. Worst winter in history. Two 18 inch blizzards and 50 below wind chill off the lake.
So cold your spit would freeze!!! Had to tunnel to my front door.
USS Vulcan Norfolk, VA. 6 month Med Cruise. First cruise in US Navy history with a mixed gender crew. What fun!
Had to get out, as an E-6, I qualified for food stamps because the pay was so bad. Thank God Reagan fixed that!
Wish do I could do it all over again! A great time in my life.
Looking at the posts I've seen so far, I feel like the "new guy" who hasn't seen much. I spent a tour In the Balkins and a tour In Iraq, but it never seems to light a candle to my fellow vets from Vietnam or Korea - I really am one of the young vets here! Thanks for your service! Now retired for 10 years, it all seems like a long time ago! Just wanted to express my thanks to the moderator to accepting me into the company here!
Yo brother! I reported for Army basic training Jan 1983, and retired after 28 years total service. Just wanted you to know, we all get "out of shape," and it's OK! Recent 1st time backyard photos by the fire pit made me realize just how "outta shape " it's easy to get. (My 1st time doing this with a little "liquid courage!")I'll start working on it! Stay safe!!
