A kipuka in the lava

Return to Discussions

A friend who used to live on the other side of the island came back to visit, and specifically to visit his old home, now isolated in a "kipuka" - the Hawaiian word for a small area of land surrounded by fresh lava. So he, my husband and I, and another friend packed food and water and hiked over steaming, jagged lava to reach the place. Once there, the friend commented to us "I just want you to know it's ok to be naked here. Do whatever you want to - just be yourself - usually I don't wear clothes when I'm here." Took me about a minute to take that hint :)

We had a nice, relaxed time - no cell service, no water, no electricity, no neighbors; a private little world to ourselves.

It's hard to imagine what that must look and feel like. A small island of green surrounded by devastation. Also hard to accept it's a natural process of the earth recreating itself.

I have visited a couple such areas in the Puna district over the years and agree that it is quite a unique experience to be so isolated and surrounded by new lava. The urge to be naked was great, and fortunately I was with nudists who agreed. As far as a sense of impermanence, yes, neither of those places exist now, having been covered by more recent flows. But then new ones have been created.
