A great Storage Idea

Return to Discussions

Hey guys, Jim's mention of converting a fridge for router bit storage made me remember a neat idea I ran across in 1970 for storing odd things reading a Popular Mechanics magazine.
Back then we bought lacquer thinner in gallon cans and had an abundance of them lying around. One day, around 1990, looking at a pile of empty cans, my forgetful brain finally recalled the great idea!
Take a stiff pocket knife and punch it through the thin metal on one side right against the rim of the top. The metal cuts easily if your knife is sharp. If your blade rides against the top seam, it will cut it so there is no sharp edge, similar to a kitchen can opener. Repeat the same near the base of the can, then down both sides removing one side of the can. I then take a small hammer and peen the two thin sides on an anvil over 1/8 inch so there are no sharp edges.
The handle on the top makes a great pull for your new drawer!
As you can see, I have made several cabinets precisely to fit the metal drawers.

I love that, for the ingenuity, the effectiveness, the resourcefulness and that it speaks of a certain time.
My extensive use of plastic baby-wipe containers for small item storage pales in comparison!
