Footwear for Nude Hiking

Return to Discussions

I thought this topic existed, but I couldn't find the thread so here it is again. If I am hiking naked, my goal for footwear is as little as possible to go with as little as possible on my torso (often just a pack and hat). Because of the distances and places I usually hike, I generally can't go barefooted. My compromise is minimalist sandals (Earth Runners to be specific). A lesson from today, however, is they don't work well in sand. Sand gets more under the straps between your toes and tears up your skin. Barefoot was the better option while in the sand dunes. What footwear do some of you prefer?

RE:Footwear for Nude Hiking

Most of my nude hiking is off trail in the Sonoran Desert where some type of shoes or boots are a must. Look up Cholla Cactus if you're not familiar. I wear lightweight hiking shoes that are not waterproof so they will breath and keep my feet from getting too sweaty. One of the things that bother me is getting dirt, small stones and other debris in my shoes while hiking. I started wearing lightweight gators a few years ago and what a difference. The material is so lightweight it's unnoticeable when wearing them. No more bringing the desert home in my shoes. I think they are available from several companies but this is where I bought mine.

Rattlesnakes are a concern but now a days more people are killed in Arizona by Bees than Rattlesnakes. I try to give both a wide berth.

Been there done that. Everything either bites you, stings you, or stabs you. Catclaw was one of my least favorites, and tarantula hawks used to scare me more than anything else. Footwear definitely needs to be more thought out in that terrain. Cholla, a.k.a., Jumping Cholla, I experienced that firsthand here in Colorado as a kid. Had one nail me in the thigh. Had I been naked and it hit me a bit more to the right, well, you get the picture.

if i'm going off grid hiking I will wear my hiking shoes and socks , sandals are ok at camp well most camps but nothing worse than than briers , stick, thorn , acorn under your toes or between them. when I canoe or kayak I have water shoes that work but not comfortable with long hikes.
