Apart from swim briefs you could try tan-thru stuff. I have some shorts and I think they allow a small amount of sun through. You can get these in briefs also and there are bikini's and one pieces for women.

I have a tan-thru suit. Sadly, I have yet to use it, but someday, I will -- once I lose weight, again, and look like this -- without sucking in my gut!

Wear the suit for yourself. Don't care about what others think.

I used to be a secret brief type wearer many years ago. Then on one trip to the Cape, I show a man on the beach who had to be 300+ lbs wearing a tiny speedo nonchalantly chatting with his female companion, not caring about the people around him. I termed that the "speedo attitude" and started wearing my speedo to the beach all the time.

I go on cruises frequently and always wear my tan-thru suit. I notice that by the end of the cruise, a lot more men are wearing their speedos. Someone has to start it off, so I say go for it.
