Nude beaches in Texas: Hippie Hollow, UFO Beach and the legal reality

Texas has one legal clothing-optional beach, Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis: fees and rules, the truth about UFO Beach on Padre Island, and what Texas law says.

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Texas has one legal nude beach, and it is not on the coast. Hippie Hollow Park on Lake Travis, west of Austin, is the only clothing-optional public park in the state; the beaches you will see listed for South Padre Island are traditions, not designations, and the difference matters in Texas more than almost anywhere else.

What Texas law actually says

Texas does not criminalize simple nudity at state level. Penal Code 21.08, indecent exposure, applies only to a person who exposes the anus or genitals "with intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person" and is "reckless about whether another is present who will be offended or alarmed." Both elements are required. A naturist sunbathing on a towel does not meet the first one, and prosecutors know it. Disorderly conduct, Penal Code 42.01, is the charge actually used against nudity in Texas, and the common local tool is a city or county ordinance, which can prohibit nudity in parks and on beaches outright. The upshot is the same as everywhere else in the country: nudity is lawful where a government has said so, and in Texas that is one park. Our guide to US nudity law walks through how to read an ordinance for yourself.

Hippie Hollow, Lake Travis

Hippie Hollow is 109 acres of limestone shoreline on the eastern bank of Lake Travis at 7000 Comanche Trail, about twenty miles from downtown Austin. People swam nude here through the 1960s, the name arrived after Woodstock, and Travis County leased the land from the Lower Colorado River Authority in 1983 and opened it as a county park in October 1985. It has been the only legally recognized clothing-optional public park in Texas ever since.

  • Fees. $8 per person, $3 for seniors 62 and over, free for veterans rated 50 percent or more disabled. Cash only at the booth; the county does not take cards.
  • Hours. 9 am to 7 pm daily; no new entries in the last 30 minutes. On holiday weekends the park closes to incoming traffic once the lots fill, usually by late morning.
  • Age. 18 and over only. The county commissioners adopted the rule on July 11, 1995 after the county attorney's reading of state nudity law; the Central Texas Nudists challenged it, an appeals court sided with the county in 1999, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case in October 2001.
  • Rules. Nudity is acceptable; lewd behavior is not. Ask permission before taking any photo. No pets under any circumstances, no glass, no ground fires, no camping, no public display of alcohol consumption, no tobacco.

The shore is rock ledge rather than sand, so bring water shoes, a thick towel and shade. The water is deep and there is no lifeguard; hydrilla grows thick in some coves in late summer. The crowd is Austin: friendly, mixed, and on Splash Days weekends very large. Behavior that would be ordinary at a Florida beach is enforced strictly here because the park's existence depends on it; the etiquette guide applies in full.

UFO Beach, Padre Island

UFO Beach is the name for a remote stretch of Gulf sand well north of South Padre Island's last public beach access, named for a washed-up buoy that looks like a flying saucer. Reaching it means a street-legal four-wheel drive down the beach, with a fee at the access point, or a very long walk, and that isolation is why nude use became a tradition there. It has no legal status. Nudity is not permitted on Cameron County or Texas General Land Office beaches, patrols reach the area irregularly and with varying attitudes, and citations for disorderly conduct do happen. Topless sunbathing is widely reported as unchallenged; full nudity is at your own risk. If you go, go on a weekday, keep a cover-up within reach, and treat a patrol vehicle on the horizon as the signal to put it on.

Other places you will see listed

Lists of "Texas nude beaches" tend to pad the two above with secluded Gulf stretches on Padre Island National Seashore and Mustang Island, river sandbars, and the far ends of state park beaches. None of these has any designation. Padre Island National Seashore is National Park Service land, where nudity can be cited as disorderly conduct, and Texas state parks prohibit it by rule. Treat every one of them as a textile beach that happens to be empty.

Where Texans actually go nude

Texas naturism lives mostly on private land. The state has a healthy set of AANR-affiliated and independent clubs around Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin, with pools, lakes and camping where nudity is lawful because the property is private; the Texas resort listings and the camping directory cover them, and our first resort visit guide explains what a day pass gets you. Hippie Hollow is the beach; the clubs are the rest of the year.

Practical notes for Hippie Hollow

  1. Bring cash for the gate and arrive before 11 am on any warm weekend.
  2. Walk in dressed; undress at your spot on the ledges, not in the lot.
  3. Towel under you on the rock, every time.
  4. Water, shade, sunscreen; there is no concession.
  5. Carry everything out. Travis County reviews the park's record every year.

The Austin naturist crowd is the heart of the community in Texas. Austin members organize Hippie Hollow days through the groups, Texas members across the state list their home club on their profiles, and the Texas beach listings carry current fee, closure and patrol notes.
