Excited Gardening This Year

Return to Discussions

I have started seeds indoors. Some of the seeds are starting to sprout. I have to work on the garden to double its size and level it out. Love to work on the garden naturally. Anyone willing to help? ;)

No veggies here but plenty of amaryllis, daylilies and a few other plants. Also grow redbuds from seed.

Drying the harvested cilantro. Will pick beans today. Maybe plant more for a succession crop.

The veggies of my spring garden have stopped producing much except a new crop of worms. The crookneck, zucchini and acorn squash still had good leaves but the veggies were not developing; off to the burn pile they went. The tomatoes are still making a few; the eggplants, peppers & melons have a few on the way so they are still being tended. The next items will be the fall cabbage & collards here in a bit and well start the new growing season. It hasnt been a great year but we did produce more edibles than prior so were still making progress. Thats the plan.

Got the garden planted. A few plants are coming up. Some transplants were small but hope they root.

Got a bunch of plants in the ground. Was using garden tractor being nude to work up the ground. Then used it to make my rows for sweet corn. Straight and even spaced rows. AM going to try flaming small weeds so not having to pull them. Although I don't mind doing it nude.

I tried burning one of my garden squares to get rid of the weeds and it did not work well. They were all gone initially but then re-sprouted after some recovery time. How about posting your procedure & results here when you're through? Maybe it can save the rest of us a little effort, too!

I just added a couple of new items to my garden adventure; I purchased a new cool type hot pepper by accident and a couple of yellow zucchini for an experiment. They are all in the ground & perking up. If you look at my lattice picture, youll see the raised bed in the shot. It has since been cleaned up & the zucchini added. Well see how it goes.

I went and looked where I burned my weeds and nothing is there. I get a lot of morning glory and it keeps coming back. So I tried burning it with flame torch and so far it looks good.

My gardening efforts this year are so far looking good. Everything has come up and is growing well. We've had really good rains and it washed in all the fertilizer; it's all dark green & sprouting everywhere. I did have one casualty; a chayote squash plant (1 out of 4) was attacked by some type of bug that bored into the bulb, it's hastily dying. But, I had sprinkled Sevin dust in the area so its days are very numbered. Otherwise, I have lots of peppers of the jalapeno, banana & bell; they're all doing great. The strawberries are a little slow along with the onions but all is moving ahead. I hadn't noticed any bees on the zucchini so a manual cotton swab pollination effort was required this morning. Anybody else want to report on their crops?

Got the garden ready. Still need to sow the planters on the deck. Cannot wait until the veggies start to come in.
