Up here they are sold bulb in a pot for winter house plants. I had some that I was able to get to bloom 3 and 4 years in a row. Enter wife with brown thumb ;-(

I had an amaryllis indoors for nearly thirty years, a gift from a friend. It flowered every four or five years. But then it was kept at my mom's house, and as she descended into Alzheimer's, she went on a spree of throwing everything away. The trouble with dementia is that they don't even know that they are hurting people they never wanted to hurt.

yes I love growing them, i am in zone 8 so they come indoors for the winter. i grow the Hippeastrum genus and recently have got the Amaryllis belladonna and crosses of this, As a nude gardener its fitting I should be growing some "naked ladies" which is another name for belladonna lilies.
I just realized I have one on my profile pic. I think its Hippeastrum minerva
